You are correct in saying that other components would be the source of the EMI, mainly the power supply.
Again, depending on severity, it can range from being subtle to quite obvious. There are plenty of people who have reported the problem being worsened when playing videogames, mainly because the videocard itself is a big source of EMI.
It's hard to explain to somebody who has never experienced this issue what the symptoms sound like, but feel free to check out some YouTube videos that will show this problem in action. There is squealing and static sounds that are obvious to anybody who isn't deaf. If you mean to say that you hear absolute silence with no interfering noises, that's unfortunately not what I hear. When you say your background is almost black, I don't quite understand what you're trying to convey. I've already had to fix the same issue through USB and the solution was to get a device that would filter out the EMI noises. I could list my components but in this case, they don't matter.
